Creatively Gifting to Those Who Support Others: The WeGift Story
For three years, WeGift operated as a unique collaboration of ethical companies and creative professionals. Our mission was simple: to offer free, professional creative work to small charities and not-for-profit organisations across the UK.
While the formal project has now concluded, our belief remains the same: the organisations doing the most for our communities deserve the tools to flourish.
Why We Launched a Creative Collaboration
We recognised that there are some amazing organisations out there doing fantastic work, particularly across London and South East London, but they are often operating on ‘shoestring’ budgets.
Understandably, these charities prioritise their funding for their primary purpose. This means marketing, branding, and website development often fall to the bottom of the list. We stepped in to bridge that gap, helping small non-profits (typically with an average income of less than £400,000) gain the professional edge they needed to attract more funding and service users.
“I have seen so many fantastic small charities set up to support others, but their digital presence was doing them a disservice. I wanted WeGift to support these organisations in the background, to help them flourish.”
— Rob Shelley, WeGift Founder
Our Philosophy: The Mycelial Network
The desire to help others is in our DNA. At WeGift, we drew inspiration from the natural world, specifically the way mushrooms support their environment.
As director Louie Schwartzberg notes in Fantastic Fungi, the mycelial network is a shared economy where ecosystems flourish without greed. The mycelium ensures their neighbours have the resources they need to thrive.
We applied this ‘shared economy’ logic to the creative world. By ‘Gifting’ our time and expertise for free, we helped create a stronger, more connected network of charities and social enterprises.
Who We Helped: Case Studies in Impact
During our three-year run, we were privileged to work with several inspiring organisations. Two standout projects include:
The New Normal (TNN) – Website Transformation
The team at The New Normal, a peer-to-peer grief charity, was struggling with an outdated website that was difficult to update and even harder to use on mobile. We designed and built a new platform with a focus on a seamless user journey. This ensured that those struggling with loss could easily find and access their vital support meetings.
Care Dogs – Branding & Communication
A befriending charity with a difference, Care Dogs pairs dog owners with older people to combat isolation. They needed a way to explain their service simply and effectively. We designed "snazzy" custom graphics and infographics to help tell their story and boost their engagement with the local community.
What Was the Catch?
There wasn’t one. We genuinely wanted to contribute our services for the greater good. While we hoped successful applicants might continue to use our services in the future, there was never an obligation. If a charity walked away with a stronger brand, a better website, and more impact, we considered that a success.
Are you Looking for Creative Support?
Although the official WeGift project has ended, our door isn’t closed. We remain passionate about supporting the charity and not-for-profit sector, especially within our local communities in London and the Southeast.
If you are a small charity in need of design, branding, or website support, we are always open to a conversation. Whether it’s friendly advice or professional work at a discounted ‘charity rate’, we’d love to see how we can help your organisation flourish.
